RTR-500GSM can be used with any SIM card which complies with the following specifications

  • Compatible with GSM (GSM 850 or GSM 1900)
  • Able to use SMS (Short Message Service) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service).
  • The card has been activated

Q3: I don't know my PIN number, what should I do?

A PIN number is a unique secret number assigned to your SIM card to safeguard against unauthorized usage.
If a PIN number has not been assigned to your SIM card it is not necessary to enter a PIN number.

If you are unsure of your PIN number at the start, check the user's manual that came with your cell phone or the information that accompanied your SIM card.
If you have questions or trouble, please contact your cell phone company or the place where you purchased the SIM card.

It is possible to re-set your PIN number by going to the RTR-500GSM Settings Utility, opening the "Settings Window" and in the "Base Unit Settings" menu make any necessary changes. In order to re-set the PIN number it is necessary to enter the PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) number.

Q4: I don't know my PUK (PIN Unlock Key) number, what should I do?

If the wrong PIN number is entered a certain number of times in a row, the SIM card will become locked.
To unlock the card a number must be entered; this number is called the PUK number. It is also used to reset the PIN number, for example when it is forgotten or lost.

Check the user's manual that came with your cell phone or the information that accompanied your SIM card.
If you have questions or trouble, please contact your cell phone company or the place where you purchased the SIM card.

If the wrong PUK number is entered a certain number of times in a row, the SIM card will become permanently blocked and unrecoverable, requiring a new SIM card.

Q6: I don't understand how to make the GPRS settings (APN, User ID and Password, what should I do?

The GPRS settings are necessary to enable the RTR-500GSM to send packets of data when sending recorded data and other data.
To complete the GPRS settings it is necessary to enter the APN (Access Point Name), the User ID for GPRS, and the unique Password.
(Depending on your cell phone company, it may not be necessary to enter a User ID and Password.)

Q7: In the RTR-500GSM Settings Utility a message appears saying that "This SIM card cannot be recognized", what should I do?

Please check the following items.

  • Check to make sure that the metal part of the SIM card holder and the SIM card itself are not dirty.
    If either is dirty please use a soft cloth to wipe away the dirt.
  • Check that the SIM card is not warped and there is sufficient electrical contact.
  • Insert the SIM card into a cell phone or other such device and see if it can be recognized.

If after checking all of the above and nothing changes, it is very possible that the SIM card is defective or has been damaged. For details contact your cell phone company or the place where you purchased the SIM card.
